Actors reveal similar experiences, claiming that fake production teams lure victims to Myanmar telecom fraud compounds under the guise of filming in Thailand

English translation:

Chinese actor Wang Xing’s disappearance at the Thailand-Myanmar border has received significant media coverage, with new details emerging.

According to multiple reports, Wang Xing departed from Shanghai Pudong Airport on the evening of January 2. He arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, early on January 3 and boarded a vehicle arranged by the production team. During this period, Wang Xing stayed in contact with his girlfriend, Jia Jia (online alias: "Sleepless Daddy"), via location sharing. However, communication was lost by noon on January 3, near the Thailand-Myanmar border.

A widely circulated screenshot of Wang Xing’s final WeChat post indicated that he was near Mae Sot District in Tak Province, Thailand, which lies along the Thailand-Myanmar border, separated from Myanmar’s Myawaddy by the Moei River.

After losing contact, Jia Jia immediately reported the incident to the police and sought assistance from the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok and the Chinese Consulate-General in Chiang Mai. On the night of January 5, she posted a detailed appeal for help on Weibo, stating that she planned to file a police report in Bangkok on January 6. In the process of gathering information, Jia Jia connected with other actors who claimed to have had similar experiences.

On January 6, the Weibo hashtag “Actor Wang Xing Missing at the Thailand-Myanmar Border” trended to the top, drawing widespread attention. Many Chinese celebrities shared the information to raise awareness.

According to Jia Jia, Wang Xing had previously received a casting notice in an actors' group. The process appeared legitimate, and he later connected with the production team coordinator, "Yan Shiliu," via WeChat. After passing the audition, Wang Xing was instructed to travel to Thailand to join the crew. Jia Jia stated that once Wang Xing boarded the flight, Yan Shiliu asked him to take photos and videos as proof of boarding.

On January 6, actor Deng You shared Jia Jia's plea on social media and disclosed his own near-miss with a similar scam. He also published screenshots of his chats with Yan Shiliu, warning fellow actors to be cautious. Deng You revealed that he had been asked to reissue his passport and was promised a role in the production.

Another actor, Xu Dajiu, commented that he had recently escaped from human traffickers, claiming it was likely the same crew. Xu later posted a video exposing the fraudulent production teams that lure victims to Thailand for filming, only to send them to Myanmar. He explained that while these teams book return flights from Bangkok to appear credible, victims face danger once they board the arranged vehicles. He also pointed out that the expensive flights were booked because they could be refunded without penalty, reducing costs and masking the scam's intent.

Xu shared that after arriving at Bangkok airport, he refused to board the vehicle, citing fatigue. He kept the 1,200 yuan deposit paid by the crew and left. In a video recorded at the airport, Xu stated that he had consulted local Thai friends and hotel staff to verify details. He confirmed that the crew had booked a hotel for him in Mae Sot, approximately a five-hour drive from the airport near the Myanmar border. Despite the crew urging him to proceed, he decided to stay at a nearby hotel, avoiding the trap.

On the morning of January 6, Xu Dajiu told reporters that he had returned to China and contacted Wang Xing’s family. He confirmed that Wang Xing had been taken to a compound in Myawaddy, Myanmar, where his head was shaved. Xu claimed to have verified this through video communication but could not share the footage for safety reasons. He asserted that both he and Wang Xing were victims of human trafficking linked to telecom scams, stating, "He (Wang Xing) is the third batch, I was the second."

However, Jia Jia denied having made contact with Wang Xing and expressed doubt about Xu’s statements.

Industry Analysis and Background:

According to industry insiders, Thailand is currently developing an international film base, and many production teams with ties to China do conduct filming in Thailand. As a result, invitations for actors to travel to Thailand for projects may appear credible to actors.

About Wang Xing:
Wang Xing graduated from Shanghai University’s Film Academy and worked in Shanghai after graduation. He appeared in several productions, including Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Yuehong Chapter as the shepherd boy, and had supporting roles in popular dramas like The Story of Rose, Under the Microscope, Psychologist, and My Brother and Sister-in-Law.

Similar Incidents in the Past:

The recent exposure of Wang Xing’s case has drawn attention to similar incidents that occurred earlier.

In September 2024, TV host Tan Yuxi, also known as Tan Zhaojun, disappeared after traveling to northern Myanmar. She had been in contact with a fellow native from Kaili, nicknamed "Xiao Sijiao," who allegedly lured her with the promise of an ideal job opportunity. Since then, Tan has vanished without a trace.

Despite her family and concerned netizens spreading the word through various channels, making phone calls, and posting pleas for help on social media, the incident failed to gain widespread attention, and Tan remains missing to this day.

Tan Yuxi, a native of Kaili in Guizhou Province, had an impressive career, much like Wang Xing. She participated in the recording of Beijing Television’s 2023 Special Spring Festival Gala and won the 12th National Film and Television Art Jinshang Award for Outstanding Host.

Chinese Government's Response:
The Chinese Embassy in Thailand stated that they had received the report and were in contact with Wang Xing’s family. The Embassy emphasized that they were actively addressing the case and had repeatedly issued warnings to Chinese citizens about similar risks. According to Jimu News, the police advised Jia Jia to report the case in Thailand and seek assistance from the Chinese diplomatic missions.

The Chinese Consulate-General in Chiang Mai confirmed that they received the family’s appeal on January 3 and provided detailed guidance on handling the matter. The Consulate pledged to follow up on the case and safeguard the safety and rights of Chinese citizens within its jurisdiction. The staff also noted that warnings about such incidents were published on the Consulate's official social media accounts and displayed at Mae Sot Airport.

Responses from Thailand and Myanmar:
According to Thai media, GMM Grammy, a major entertainment company in Thailand, stated that it had only just learned of the incident and was unaware of the details. The company is investigating the alleged involvement of "Yan Shiliu," who reportedly claimed to be a GMM employee while contacting Chinese actors for the production. The company promised to issue an update as soon as progress was made.

Meanwhile, Thai journalists confirmed with Mae Sot Police that the authorities were previously unaware of the case but would coordinate with the Chinese Embassy once the victim's family filed a formal report.

A rescue worker specializing in Thailand-Myanmar border operations told Sihanoukville Journal that this news is significant, adding, “Thailand will likely intervene. The military will step in, and he (Wang Xing) should be found soon.”
